Religious Education Job Opportunity

The First Church in Chestnut Hill is seeking a part-time religious education teacher for children through Grade 6 in a multi-aged setting.  Established in 1861, First Church is a historic Unitarian congregation worshipping in the Christian tradition.

Curriculum: The school curriculum is a modified UCC program, focused on Bible stories and generally following the Reformed lectionary.  There is an emphasis on retelling the stories through various media (art and crafts, performance, etc.).  A parent who is also a musician will work with the teacher, leading and teaching hymns.  Music skills are most welcome but are not required.  Children participate in their own worship each Sunday, beginning in the adult service approximately once per month.

Requirements: An applicant should have familiarity with Bible stories and teaching experience, and preferably knowledge of child development.  The position will begin in September 2010 and will entail teaching on Sunday mornings throughout the church year, any Sundays off to be coordinated with the Religious Education Committee.  Additional time during the week would be spent in preparation of the lesson plan and activities.  There are also periodic meetings with the RE Committee and the minister.  The time per week will vary, but is generally 8-10 hours, with the increase at the holidays.

Salary: The salary is $6,500.00, and has customarily been paid over 12 months although this is not a requirement.  The church year is from the first Sunday after Labor Day (this year, September 12, 2010) through the second Sunday in June.

Location: First Church is located at 26 Suffolk Road, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts  02467.  It is off Hammond Street, between Route 9 and Beacon Street, within short walking distance of the Chestnut Hill MBTA stop on the Riverside Green Line and the Chestnut Hill campus of Boston College.  Staff parking is available.
