Events, Committees & Celebrations

Throughout the year, different groups of adults, families, children and young people take part in a lively range of activities.

Every Sunday service is followed by an informal discussion group that meets in our newly refurnished parlor. Topics have ranged from important events of the week to pressing questions of morality and ethics: the focus of which can be based within our community or half way around the world.

An expanded form of this has been our successful Wednesday Nights at First Church events. Individuals of local and national stature are invited to sit around the table and talk about their medical innovation, latest novel or trip to another religious culture.

First Church functions in part "by committee" - and many people answer the call to work with others in these various small groups that help shape the future while preserving the historic past.

Our annual Thanksgiving Fair has taken place for more than eighty years. Prepared foods, crafts, baskets of flowers and many other great items are offered for sale to benefit the work of the Women's Alliance. Annual supporters come from Brookline, Newton and several other neighboring churches.

The Christmas Pageant, Easter morning songfest, the Sunday School Picnic and other events are enjoyed each year by the entire congregation. Decorating the Parish Hall for Christmas after caroling to neighborhood shut-ins, burning the greens on Twelfth Night, cooking the Easter breakfast, and making ice cream at the Sunday School picnic are traditional activities of families and friends of the congregation.
